Missing Morocco, in Morocco 5/27/25

Our last day in Morocco has been a very bittersweet experience. Today, we are in Tangier, Morocco, and I keep trying to take the day in. Morocco has been very kind to all of us. I never thought I would feel connected to so many people that I just met—like my homestay mother, her family, and even the Moroccan students we met back in Meknes. I’m going to miss Morocco so much, but like I have been telling everyone inshallah, I will be back. We had a free day today, which means the students could do whatever they wanted for the entire day. I started my day off going to a café with a group of friends, and to our surprise, the food was under 100 dirhams, with a beautiful view! Kudos to Ousamma (our tour guide) for showing us really good places everywhere. He has made Morocco a much more connecting experience for me.

After the café, everyone went to the medinas, but I stayed at the hotel since I was feeling fatigued from all the walking in Chefchaouen, you can read the other blog about it! At the hotel, I just rested until it was time to go to the nearby beach. But before the beach, I went to McDonald’s, and for some reason, all the McDonald’s I’ve been to here are very fancy. In the U.S., McDonald’s feels very casual, but here the atmosphere is more like a café, I’d actually go study at Mcdonald’s if I lived here. If you’re curious, the chicken nuggets here taste better compared to the States, but the fries and the ice cream taste the same. They also have items like chicken wraps, spicy chicken nuggets, and steak fries that are not in the States.

I took my food to the beach, and the beach in Tangier was absolutely beautiful. I will say it beats Casablanca’s beaches by miles. At the beach, I walked around the shoreline, but my highlight was taking pictures with my friends. We had a mini photoshoot, and the pictures turned out absolutely stunning, especially of my friend Karina. These are pictures I’m going to show my grandchildren in the future so they know how I was at 19 years old. I think it’s so cool that I’ll be able to tell people about how I was literally in Morocco. I am never, ever going to be 19, on the beach in Tangier, ever again, and I’m happy I got to experience that. I feel very lucky and privileged to be here in the first place. At the beach, there were people playing soccer, people on horses (which I’ve never seen on the beach before), and the sun was just right since we went to catch the sunset.

We all had so much fun. I heard others also went to the beach and the medinas on their own time. After the beach, I went to McDonald’s again… but this time for an ice cream and to accompany those who hadn’t had dinner yet. We eventually made it back to the hotel, packed, and went to sleep in order to head to Spain the next day. I will forever miss my time here in Morocco, and I cannot wait to hopefully come back again.
Signing off,
Edith F.
