Scents, Sea, and Spice in Casablanca

Salam! Today was a beautiful blend of modernity, culture, and coastal charm. Our first stop was the famed Morocco Mall. Although I already knew it was the largest mall in Africa, it became clear the moment we arrived that this wasn’t just an ordinary shopping center. A group of about 30 children eagerly waited outside, likely on a school field trip. I wondered what the main attraction was until I stepped inside.

The first thing that captured my attention was the fragrance store near the entrance. Rich, bold aromas filled the air. Arabian perfumes are known for their musky, long-lasting scent, deeply rooted in tradition. Though I enjoyed browsing, I knew the children hadn’t lined up for the perfume.

Further inside, I found the real spectacle: a massive aquarium located at the heart of the mall. Children and adults alike stood mesmerized by the vibrant fish and marine life. It was a stunning combination of commercial space and natural beauty. Upstairs, I spotted an indoor amusement park complete with games and roller coasters. Unfortunately, time wasn’t on my side, and I had to skip it after browsing through several local clothing shops.

After hours of exploring, we regrouped for lunch at La Sqala: Café Maure. Group meals have quickly become one of my favorite parts of this trip. While I love the freedom to choose my own food and activities, there’s something comforting about a well-curated dining experience with everyone gathered around the same table.

Our group leader, Oussama, ordered a variety of appetizers that were a hit. The table next to ours devoured theirs so quickly that someone joked we were slow eaters but in truth, we were just savoring every bite.

For my entrée, I chose the fish tajine, and once again, Moroccan cuisine did not disappoint. Served in a traditional clay pot with a deep auburn hue, the dish was as visually beautiful as it was flavorful. The roasted fish was topped with bell peppers, tomatoes, carrots, and soaked in a savory broth. It was filling, delicious, and left most of us too full to finish everything on our plates

With full bellies, we returned to the hotel but the day wasn’t over. A few of us decided to step out of our comfort zones and try something new: a traditional Moroccan hammam (public bathhouse) at the Hassan II Mosque.

Excited but a bit nervous, we made our way to the women’s entrance. Sadly, the hammam was completely booked for the day. Though disappointed, I still felt proud for trying. We texted our driver and made a quick decision to shift gears.

Our new plan led us to the beach, and it turned out to be the perfect ending to an eventful day. The coastline was alive with families, children playing, vendors strolling, and even camels and horses along the shore.

The Atlantic shone under the sun. As the waves grew stronger, lifeguards cleared the water. I sat in the sand, reflecting on the day, the fulfilling meals, the little surprises, and the setbacks. Sometimes, you just have to roll with the punches. And while we lost two hours chasing a new experience, I’m glad I was brave enough to try and flexible enough to pivot. In the end, it still turned into a day I’ll never forget.
