Hello everyone!

Today was filled with so much adventure and fun! To start off our day, we walked to ULatina to meet with our group to head off to the Parque La Libertad, which was where we did our service project. Upon arriving at the university, we greeted everyone and said happy birthday to Haley! Haley turned 19 today, so the group wanted to make sure this particular day was memorable for her.

Once everyone made it to our meeting point, we then hopped on our private shuttle to head to the park. It was quite a scenic ride to the Parque La Libertad, as we exited Heredia and went into San Jose. It was about an hour bus ride, which is common in Costa Rica because of the traffic. Along with the attractive views, our wonderful tour guide, Angie, was sharing some facts about the different provinces and districts we were passing through, along with some history about certain landmarks. This made the ride feel like a 20 minute ride rather than an hour which we all enjoyed.

After an exciting bus ride, we had finally arrived at our destination and we were all eager to get our hands dirty. For many of us, we had little to no experience with gardening, so it was definitely challenging, however, we all enjoyed spending that time together, working as a team, and giving back to the community. The main plan behind our service activity was to plant a garden in the park. We had split our service activity into two days, and today was pretty much forming the foundation of the garden. Sara and Juan-Carlos, the directors of the project who helped us put the service together, were so kind and helpful in making this work.

We were then given specific tasks to complete, were handed different types of shovels/rakes, and gardening gloves to get straight to work. Our main framework of today’s service was creating the outline for the garden, making sure the garden was leveled out by making adjustments, dug out the grass from the area we had chosen, and then laid out the compost once we had completed the steps listed. All of us were covered in sunscreen, bug spray, sweat, and were out of breath from the hot sun. It was difficult to say the least but we had so much fun and support from all of us. It turned out to be successful and we cannot wait to return on Tuesday to see the final results!

Due to a long day of hard work and it being Haley’s birthday, we decided to go out with the group and celebrate her birthday with some exploring of Heredia and ending the night off with fun karaoke. I am excited for what’s to come from the rest of our trip!

Talk to you soon,

Karla Rodiles
